It’s July, the peak of summer and as perfect a time as any to indulge in ice cream and frozen treats. However, warm summer weather isn’t the only reason to break out the ice cream tub this month. In 1984, July was bestowed the honor of being named National Ice Cream Month, with the third Sunday of the month being designated National Ice Cream Day.

This year, on July 21st, ice cream shops around the country will celebrate with discounts and unique flavors, but who says you can’t celebrate from the comfort of your own home? We’re all about empowering home cooks to embrace innovation, learn new things, and try new flavors, so we’ve compiled this list of National Ice Cream Day recipes that can be made right at home.

The Classics: Homemade Ice Cream Sundae Bar

Would it really be National Ice Cream Day without ice cream sundaes? Use prep bowls, serving utensils, ice cream scoops, and syrup dispensers to create your very own do-it-yourself sundae bar for big parties with lots of guests. Serve up an array of candies, nuts, sprinkles, spices, and syrups for guests to add as many toppings as their hearts desire. For the main event, easily make your own ice cream with Zoku’sindividual ice cream maker. For the overachievers out there, follow the recipe below to go the extra mile and make your own ice cream from scratch without an ice cream maker:

    IngredientsInstructions
    1. Warm your mixture
    2. Cool your mixture
      • Pour your warmed ingredients into a heat-safe bowl (stainless steel or stoneware) and allow them to cool to room temperature.
      • Once cooled, add your mixture into a ziploc bag, squeeze all the air out, and seal.
      • Place the bag in your freezer, lying flat, until it has frozen solid.
    3. Churn your mixture
      • Remove your frozen mixture from the freezer and break it into small chunks.
      • Add the chunks of frozen mixture to a food processor and pulse until completely smooth.
    4. Cover and freeze until you're ready to serve

Go The Extra Mile: Homemade Ice Cream Cones

Have you ever wondered how an ice cream cone is made? National Ice Cream day is about appreciating every aspect of ice cream: the ice cream experts of today, the ice cream makers that came before them, and the way they’ve brought people and families together.

To some, the cone is just as important as the ice cream itself. Invented in 1896 by Italo Marchioni, an Italian-born New York citizen, ice cream cones are an under-appreciated backbone of the ice cream industry. This National Ice Cream Day, remember Italo by crafting your very own ice cream cones from scratch:

    IngredientsInstructions
    • 2 large eggs whites
    • ½ cup (155g) granulated sugar
    • 3 tablespoons (44ml) whole milk
    • ½ teaspoon (7.4ml) vanilla extract, vanilla beans, or vanilla bean paste
    • ⅛ teaspoon (2g) salt
    • ⅔ cup (100g) butter, melted and cooled
    • (Optional) 2 tablespoons (57g) semisweet chocolate, melted
    • (Optional) 3 tablespoons (42.5g) sprinkles
    • (Optional) ¼ cup (35g) choppednuts
    1. Prep your butter
      • Melt your butter in a saucepan or small bowl in the microwave.
      • Set aside to come to room temperature while you prep your other ingredients.
      • Pro tip: if you’re strapped for time, stick your melted butter in the fridge to cool.
    2. Combine your wet ingredients
    3. Add your flour
      • Sift your flour into your wet ingredients.
      • Use a whisk or hand mixer to whisk your flour into your batter until it’s fully combined.
    4. Add your butter
      • Whisk in your melted and cooled butter until your batter is smooth.
    5. Cook your cones
      • Place a frying pan on low heat, giving it a few minutes to heat up.
      • Once your pan is heated, pour 1 ½ tablespoons of batter onto the skillet.
      • Use an offset spatula to spread your batter into a thin, 6” circle.
      • Cook for 3-4 minutes, flip, and cook for another 1-2 minutes until both sides are golden brown.
    6. Form your cones
      • Remove your cooked cone from the heat and use a cone-shaped tool to immediately roll it into a cone shape, holding it in place until it hardens.
    7. (Optional) Decorate your cones
      • Once you’ve finished your cones, you can either serve them plain or dip the edges and tips in melted chocolate.
      • After dipping in chocolate, roll your cones in chopped nuts or sprinkles, setting aside on parchment paper to harden.

Add a Fruity Twist: Homemade Ice Pops

While not technically ice cream, ice pops are a great summertime treat to add a fruity pop to your National Ice Cream Day. Sure, you could grab ice pops from virtually any grocery store, but where’s the fun in that? Making your own homemade ice pops is easy and super rewarding. Here’s our simple recipe for homemade ice pops with endless variations:

    IngredientsInstructions
    • 2 cups (680g) of fresh fruit (strawberries, oranges, mangoes, raspberries, etc.)
    • 1 cup (236.5ml) of juice, milk, or coconut water
    • 2 to 4 tablespoons honey, sugar, or syrup
    1. Blend your ingredients
      • Using a paring knife, cut your fruit into small chunks and add to a food processor.
      • Add your liquid and sweetener and blend together until smooth.
    2. Freeze your mixture
      • Pour your mixture into popsicle molds.
      • Freeze your popsicles for at least 12 hours.
    3. Remove your popsicles
      • Once your popsicles are frozen, remove them from the freezer and run them under warm water to easily remove from their molds.

Get Creative: Ice Cream Flavor Variations

This National Ice Cream Day, we invite you to get creative, think outside the box, and try something brand new. Infuse tea leaves or cocktail infusions into your ice cream base to create unique flavors and blends. Otherwise, add creative candies, syrups and spices for a twist on traditional ice cream flavors.
