    Similar to Christmas Eve, Christmas morning is often a flurry of wrapping paper, Christmas cookies, and excited little ones. Between all of the excitement, parents are often hard-pressed to work in a nutritious breakfast. That’s why we’ve come up with these simple Christmas breakfast ideas. All of these are brimming with holiday cheer and can be prepped ahead of time for an easy Christmas morning treat. 

    The Sweet: French Toast Casserole

    Embrace the Christmas-morning sugar rush with this delicious french toast casserole. This simple breakfast is quick, easy, and customizable. Add your own twist with berries, bananas, or nuts, and prep ahead of time so it’s as simple as popping your casserole in the oven on Christmas morning.

    IngredientsInstructions
    • 1 loaf of brioche bread, cut into 1” cubes
    • 6 large eggs
    • 2 cups whole milk
    • ½ cup heavy cream
    • ½ cup granulated sugar
    • 1 cup tightly packed brown sugar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
    • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • ⅛ teaspoon salt
    • ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • ¼ cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes and chilled
    1. Assemble your casserole
      • Grease a 9” x 13” baking dish with butter.
      • Spread your bread cubes evenly in the bottom of your dish.
    2. Prepare your custard
      • In a large bowl, whisk together your eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, vanilla, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
    3. Combine your custard and bread
      • Pour your custard evenly over your bread cubes.
      • Press down lightly with a spatula to ensure your bread is soaked.
      • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
    4. Make your topping
      • In a medium bowl, mix your flour, ½ cup brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
      • Add your cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter to cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
      • Store in the fridge until you’re ready to bake.
    5. Bake your casserole
      • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
      • Remove the casserole from the fridge and sprinkle with your topping.
      • Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
    6. Serve
      • Allow your casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes.
      • Serve dusted with powdered sugar and warm maple syrup.

    The Savory: Puff Pastry Pinwheels

    Another simple Christmas morning breakfast that can be made ahead, these puff pastry pinwheels have festive hints of red and green to add an extra hint of holiday cheer. Another customizable option, feel free to add your own flair to this dish by adding other ingredients, like feta cheese or bell peppers.

    IngredientsInstructions
    • 1 sheet puff pastry, partially thawed
    • 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
    • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
    • ¼ cup sun-dried tomatoes, finely chopped
    • ¼ cup parmesan cheese, grated
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • Salt & pepper, to taste
    • 1 large egg, beaten
    1. Preheat your oven
    2. Prepare your filling
      • In a medium bowl, combine your cream cheese, chopped spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, parmesan cheese, and garlic.
      • Season with salt & pepper to taste.
      • Mix with a silicone spatula until thoroughly combined.
    3. Assemble your pinwheels
      • Roll out your puff pastry on a lightly floured cutting board.
      • Spread your spinach and cream cheese mixture over the puff pastry in an even layer, leaving ½” around the edges.
    4. Roll and slice
      • Starting from one long side, tightly roll your puff pastry into a log.
      • Use a sharp knife to slice the log into ½” pinwheels.
      • (Optional) Store in the fridge, covered, overnight.
    5. Arrange and brush your pinwheels
      • Place your pinwheels 1” apart on your prepared baking sheet.
      • Brush the tops with your beaten egg.
    6. Bake your pinwheels
      • Bake in your preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, until the pinwheels are golden brown.
    7. Serve
      • Allow your pinwheels to cool for 5 minutes before serving.

    Between Sweet & Savory: Peppermint Mocha Latte

    Every Christmas morning, my brothers and I weren’t allowed to start in on our presents until my mom had her morning coffee. It was her one requirement for Christmas morning, and I doubt she’s alone. This year, try out this inventive latte for an extra bit of Christmas cheer.

    IngredientsInstructions
    • 1 cup strong brewed coffee (or 2 espresso shots)
    • 1 cup milk
    • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
    • ¼ teaspoons peppermint extract
    • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
    • (Optional) whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and/or peppermint candies, for topping
    1. Brew your coffee
    2. Heat your milk
    3. Add your flavors
      • Stir in your chocolate syrup, whisking until it fully incorporates into the milk.
      • Stir in your peppermint extract and vanilla.
    4. Combine your milk and coffee
    5. (Optional) add your toppings
      • Top your latte with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and/or crushed peppermint candies.
